Hadith 2166

Humaid says: It was asked from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) about the night prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: We did not want to see the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praying at night, but we would see him like that anyway, and we did not want to see him sleeping, but we would see him like that as well. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would begin to fast so much in a month that we would say he will not leave any fast of this month, but then when he would start leaving the fasts, we would say now he will not fast any more in this month.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of this blessed hadith is that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would neither sleep the entire night nor stand (in prayer) the entire night; rather, he would alternate between both actions at intervals. In this way, some would see the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam standing (in prayer), and others would see him sleeping.

The meaning is that you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not persist in a single habit. Sometimes, you would be standing (in prayer) during one part of the night, and then you would change the habit of standing during that part. An observer would think that at that time your habit is to stand (in prayer), so you must be standing, but instead, you would have started to rest at that time instead of standing. Similarly, you would change the habit of resting at a certain time. That is, sometimes you would change the habit of resting in the early part of the night and begin to stand (in prayer), and sometimes you would change the habit of standing in the middle of the night and begin to rest. And so on, by this analogy. (Abdullah Rafiq)
