عَنْ يَعْلَى بْنِ مَمْلَكٍ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا عَنْ صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِاللَّيْلِ وَقِرَاءَتِهِ، فَقَالَتْ: مَا لَكُمْ وَلِصَلَاتِهِ وَلِقِرَاءَتِهِ، كَانَ يُصَلِّي قَدْرَ مَا يَنَامُ، وَيَنَامُ قَدْرَ مَا يُصَلِّي، وَإِذَا هِيَ تَنْعَتُ قِرَاءَةً مُفَسَّرَةً حَرْفًا حَرْفًا
Ya'la bin Mamlak says: I asked Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) about the night prayer and recitation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: What concern do you have with the prayer and recitation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He would pray as much as he slept, and he would sleep as much as he prayed. Then she described the manner of his recitation, that it was absolutely clear, letter by letter.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of “What connection do you have with the prayer and recitation of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam?” is that the night prayer (qiyam al-layl) and recitation of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam are beyond your capacity; you cannot fulfill their due right. From these chapters and many other ahadith, one can gauge the quality, quantity, and standard of the night prayer (qiyam al-layl) of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and the issue of reciting the Qur’an slowly and deliberately is made clear.
