Hadith 2137

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When any one of you stands for prayer at night, but (due to the dominance of sleep) the Qur'an becomes difficult on his tongue and he does not even understand what he is reciting, then he should lie down.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The issue that has been stated in this blessed hadith is clear, but it is also necessary to reflect on this point: how much concentration is required in prayer. If a person is not feeling sleepy and is reciting in prayer, but pays no attention whatsoever to his recitation and the supplications he utters, then such a person will be one whose body is awake but whose soul is asleep. In this chapter, some supplications of istiftah (opening supplication) are mentioned. In addition to these, other supplications are also established from the ahadith. Some of them have already been mentioned in the chapters on prayers under the heading of the supplication of istiftah and the explanation of seeking refuge (ta'awwudh) before recitation.
