Abdullah bin Abi Qais says: I asked Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would sleep in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah)? Would he perform ghusl before sleeping? She said: He would sometimes perform ghusl and then sleep, and sometimes he would perform wudu and then sleep. I then asked her: How was the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at night? Would he recite in a loud voice or in a low voice? She said: He would do both; sometimes he would recite in a loud voice and sometimes in a low voice.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Abu Bakr! I passed by you and you were praying in a very low voice." He (Abu Bakr) said: "O Messenger of Allah! I was making Him hear Whom I was whispering to." Then the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said to Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu: "I passed by you and you were praying in a loud voice." He (Umar) said: "I was waking up the drowsy one and driving away Satan." The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Abu Bakr! Raise your voice a little." And he said to Umar radi Allahu anhu: "Lower your voice a little." (Abu Dawud: 1329, Tirmidhi: 447) It is understood from this that when a person is praying alone, he should recite in a low voice.
