Hadith 2119

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The most beloved fast to Allah Almighty is the fast of Dawood (peace be upon him), and he used to fast half of the time, and the most beloved prayer at night to Allah is also that of Dawood (peace be upon him). He would sleep for the first half of the night, then stand (in prayer), then sleep in the last part of it, then after half the night, he would stand for one third of the night.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The words of this hadith "then he would stand for a third of the night after its half" are interpolated from the speech of the narrator of the hadith, Amr ibn Aws; this is supported by the narration of Sahih Muslim. The meaning of "they would fast half the time" is to fast one day and break the fast the next day. In light of another narration, the routine of the night prayer (qiyam) of Dawud (alayhis salam) becomes as follows: sleeping for half the night, then standing (in prayer) for one third of the night, then sleeping for one sixth of the night. For example, if the duration of the night is six hours, then after sleeping for three hours, he would stand in prayer for two hours, and then sleep for one hour.
