It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform the two rak'ahs of Fajr, he would lie down on his right side.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From these ahadith it is understood that after the two Sunnah (sunnat) units of Fajr, one should lie down on the right side; no further interpretation can be made regarding this. However, the majority of worshippers, or rather almost all worshippers, are heedless of acting upon this Sunnah. An important issue is that if a worshipper is unable to perform the two Sunnah units before the Fajr prayer, he has the option to perform these Sunnah units after the obligatory (fard) prayer or after sunrise. The evidences are as follows:

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Whoever did not pray the two rak‘ahs of Fajr, let him pray them after the sun rises.” (Tirmidhi: 423, Sahihah: 2361)

Sayyiduna Qais radi Allahu anhu says: I performed the Fajr prayer with the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, (after finishing the obligatory prayer, I began to perform the two Sunnah units that are before it). When the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam saw me, he said: “Wait, O Qais! Are there two (obligatory) prayers together?” I said: O Messenger of Allah! I was unable to perform the two Sunnah units of Fajr (before the prayer, so I am performing them now). The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Then there is no harm.” (Abu Dawood: 1267, Tirmidhi: 422)

A Companion of the Messenger says that when I came to the mosque, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was leading the Fajr prayer. I prayed with him, and when he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam finished the prayer with salam, I began to perform the two Sunnah units of Fajr. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said to me: “What are these two rak‘ahs?” I said: These are the two Sunnah units which I was unable to perform before Fajr. Upon hearing this, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam remained silent and did not say anything. (Dar Qutni: 1424, Bayhaqi: 2/483, Ibn Hibban: 624, Mustadrak Hakim: 1/274)

It is understood from this that when the mu’adhdhin begins to pronounce the iqamah for the Fajr prayer, and a worshipper has not yet performed the Sunnah units, he should first join the congregational obligatory prayer, and after the prayer or after sunrise, he may perform the two Sunnah units.
