Hadith 2085

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said three times: There is prayer between every two calls to prayer, for whoever wishes.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … There are further evidences indicating the two units (rak‘ahs) of prayer before Maghrib, but it is not intended here to encompass all of them. However, I will mention one practical (fi‘li) hadith so that the issue becomes clearer. Sayyiduna Abdullah Muzani radi Allahu anhu says: “Indeed, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam prayed before Maghrib.” … The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed two rak‘ahs before Maghrib. (Sahih Ibn Hibban: 1586)

Allamah Sindhi Hanafi said: The apparent (meaning) is that the two rak‘ahs before Maghrib are permissible, rather, they are recommended (mandub). I have not found any satisfactory answer from those who prohibit them. (Hashiyah al-Sindhi ‘ala al-Nasa’i: 1/283, 2/28) It is not known why some people, despite the presence of authentic and explicit narrations on this subject, oppose these two rak‘ahs.

Imam al-Albani rahimahullah wrote under the hadith of Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu: From this blessed hadith, the clear legislated status (mashru‘iyyah) of performing two rak‘ahs before Maghrib is established, because the senior Companions were diligent in performing them and the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam maintained them. Other general ahadith also prove this prayer, for example, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Zubayr radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “There is no obligatory prayer except that before it are two rak‘ahs.” (Sahih Ibn Hibban: 615, Silsilah al-Sahihah: 232) … There is no obligatory prayer except that before it (at least) two rak‘ahs (of voluntary prayer) are performed.

This is the madhhab of Imam Ahmad, Imam Ishaq, and the hadith scholars (muhaddithin), but some blind followers (muqallid) reject these explicit ahadith that indicate the two voluntary rak‘ahs before Maghrib. (Silsilah al-Sahihah: 234)
