It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: When the muezzin would call the adhan for Maghrib, the Companions would rush towards the pillars to perform two rak‘ahs before Maghrib, and when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would arrive, they would be in that state, and there would be a short interval between the adhan and the iqamah.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From this blessed hadith, it is also established that in the presence of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, the noble Companions would observe the practice of using a sutrah (barrier) even in the mosque. In one narration, the wording of this hadith is as follows:
From Anas ibn Malik radi Allahu anhu, he said: “During the time of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, when the muezzin would finish giving the adhan (call to prayer) for the Maghrib prayer, the distinguished Companions of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would rush towards the pillars, and (using them as a sutrah) would perform two rak‘ahs before Maghrib. When the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would come out, they would be engaged in prayer. So many people would perform these two rak‘ahs that a stranger would think that the prayer had already been offered (and that people were now performing the subsequent sunnah prayers). And there was only a short interval between the adhan and the iqamah.” (Sahih Bukhari: 2/85, Sahih Muslim: 2/212)
