Hadith 2058

(Second chain) Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) used to regularly perform four rak‘ahs before Zuhr. Someone said to him: “You perform this prayer very regularly?” He replied: “I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) doing this, so I asked him about it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘This is a time when the gates of the heavens are opened, and I like that my righteous deed is raised up at that time.’”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … By "separating salams" is meant that the four rak‘ahs should be performed as two sets of two rak‘ahs each, but the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam taught them to be performed together. However, it is also permissible to perform these sunnahs as two sets of two rak‘ahs, as is evident from the following hadith: It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((Salat al-layl wa al-nahar mathna.)) … The prayer of the night and day is in sets of two rak‘ahs.

Imam al-Albani says: This hadith is authentic; I have referenced it in (Sahih Abi Dawud: 1172) and (al-Hawd al-Mawrud fi Zawa’id Muntaqa Ibn al-Jarud: 123). From the hadith of this chapter, it is established that the four rak‘ah sunnah can be performed with one salam, and from this hadith, it is established that they can be performed with two salams. The way to reconcile and combine between them is that the hadith of the chapter is taken as permissibility, and the hadith of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu is taken as superiority, just as is the case with the voluntary prayers of the night. And Allah knows best. (Sahihah: 237) That is, the four rak‘ah sunnahs can be performed with one salam or as two sets of two rak‘ahs. By the hadith of this chapter, Shaykh al-Albani means the hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu, from which it is established that the four sunnahs before ‘Asr should be performed with one salam. This hadith has already been mentioned a few pages earlier under the heading: A comprehensive account of the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam voluntary and obligatory sunnahs of the day.
