Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Two (rak‘ahs) before Zuhr, two after it, two after Maghrib, two after ‘Isha, and two rak‘ahs before Fajr—these were such prayers that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would never abandon them.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From this hadith, two Sunnah (supererogatory) units before Zuhr are established. From the last hadith of the next chapter, it is understood that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would always perform four Sunnah units before Zuhr. Now, the meaning here is that at times the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would perform only two units, or that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu was only aware of two units, whereas the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would actually perform four. Both of these possibilities are valid. In any case, the superiority of four is established.
