Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I performed eleven prostrations with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), one of which was the prostration of Surah An-Najm.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This narration is weak; nevertheless, Surah An-Najm contains a verse of prostration (sajdah of recitation), as is made clear by other narrations. The prostration of recitation (sajdah at-tilawah) is recommended (mustahabb). The clarification of this ruling is coming in the following chapters, and according to the preferred (rajih) opinion, being in a state of ablution (wudu) or facing the qiblah is not a condition for the prostration of recitation. Furthermore, it is Sunnah to perform this prostration only at the time when the verse of prostration is recited. There is the following difference of opinion regarding the number of prostrations of recitation in the Noble Qur’an:

Imam Abu Hanifah: There are a total of fourteen prostrations; according to him, the second prostration in Surah Al-Hajj is not included.

Imam Shafi’i: There are a total of fourteen prostrations; according to him, the prostration in Surah Sad is not a prostration of recitation, but only a prostration of gratitude (sajdah ash-shukr).

Imam Malik: There are a total of eleven; according to him, the prostrations in the Mufassalat surahs and the second prostration in Surah Al-Hajj are not included.

However, the reality is that the prostration in Surah Sad, the second prostration in Surah Al-Hajj, and the prostrations in the Mufassalat surahs are established by forthcoming and other evidences. In this way, there are a total of fifteen prostrations in the Noble Qur’an; this is the opinion of Imam Ahmad and it is the preferred (rajih) view. In the copies of the Noble Qur’an printed among us, only “as-sajdah ‘inda ash-Shafi’i” is written at the second prostration of Surah Al-Hajj, and it is not counted among the rest of the prostrations, due to which the last prostration in the Noble Qur’an is numbered (14). For this reason, fourteen prostrations have become well-known among us, whereas according to the preferred opinion, there are a total of (15) prostrations. Those who number the prostrations in the Noble Qur’an should have numbered all the prostrations and clarified the issue at the end of the Noble Qur’an.

The following fourteen surahs of the Noble Qur’an contain prostrations of recitation: Surah Al-A’raf, Surah Ar-Ra’d, Surah An-Nahl, Surah Bani Isra’il, Surah Maryam, Surah Al-Hajj, Surah Al-Furqan, Surah An-Naml, Surah As-Sajdah, Surah Sad, Surah Ha Mim As-Sajdah, Surah An-Najm, Surah Inshiqaq, Surah Al-‘Alaq. There are two prostrations in Surah Al-Hajj; the last three surahs are from the Mufassalat.
