Hadith 2006

(وَمِنْ طَرِيقٍ خَامِسٍ) عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَهَا فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَسَجَدَ بِهِمْ سَجْدَتَيِ السَّهْوِ بَعْدَ الْكَلَامِ
(Fifth chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forgot during the prayer, then after speaking, he performed two prostrations of forgetfulness.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of these narrations is clear: if, after the (final) salam, one becomes aware of an addition or of such a deficiency for which the prayer is not repeated, then at that very moment two prostrations of forgetfulness (sujud as-sahw) should be performed, and then the salam should be given again. For example, if after giving salam it is realized that five units (rak‘ahs) have been performed, or the tashahhud has been omitted.
