Hadith 2001

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the Zuhr or Asr prayer, and he stood up for the third rak‘ah (skipping the middle Tashahhud). When we said “Subhan Allah,” the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said “Subhan Allah” to alert us and gestured for us to stand, so we also stood up. When he was about to finish his prayer, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed two prostrations and said: If anyone remembers before standing up completely straight, he should sit down, and if he has already stood up completely straight, then he should not sit down.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From these ahadith it is understood that if the middle tashahhud is missed in a three- or four-unit (rak‘ah) prayer, then this deficiency should be compensated by performing two prostrations of forgetfulness (sujud as-sahw) either before or after the salutation (salam). When the prostrations are performed after the salam, then after these prostrations, the salam should be given again. Furthermore, the last hadith also indicates that when someone, after forgetting the middle tashahhud, is in the process of standing up but realizes the forgetfulness before standing fully upright, then he should sit down. However, if he has already stood up straight, then he should not return for the middle tashahhud, but rather continue his prayer, and to make up for this deficiency, he should perform two prostrations of forgetfulness either before or after the salam.
