Hadith 1996

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Hudaij (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led a prayer one day and after saying salam, he left, while one rak‘ah of that prayer was still remaining. A man met him and said: You have forgotten one rak‘ah of the prayer. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) re-entered the mosque and ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), so he established the prayer, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in one rak‘ah of prayer. When I told this to the people, they began to ask me: Do you recognize that man? I said: No, but if I see him, I will recognize him. Just then, he passed by me, and I said: This is the man. The people said: This is Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaidullah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of this chapter is the same as the previous chapter, that when a person ends the prayer (salam) after performing fewer units (rak‘ahs), he should complete those units and then perform the prostration of forgetfulness (sajdah sahw).
