Hadith 1980

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any one of you prays and forgets to such an extent that he does not know how much he has prayed, then he should perform two prostrations while sitting. And when Satan comes to someone and says, "You have broken your ablution," he should say to him, "You have lied," unless he perceives a smell from his nose or hears a sound with his ear.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the next hadith, there is an explanation of how to complete the units (rak‘at) before performing the prostration of forgetfulness (sajdat al-sahw). What is meant by Satan saying one is without ablution (wudu) is that he casts a whisper (waswasa) of being without ablution. In such a situation, the one praying should not be affected by this whisper and should immediately dismiss such a thought. However, if the one praying becomes certain that his ablution has been nullified, then he should perform ablution again.
