Hadith 1959

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Shaddad (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us in the mosque for the Zuhr or Asr prayer in the latter part of the day, while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was carrying Sayyiduna Hasan or Sayyiduna Husayn. He (peace and blessings be upon him) moved forward, set him down, and pronounced the takbir for prayer and began to pray. In between, he performed a long prostration. When I raised my head to see (the reason), suddenly that same child was on the back of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the state of prostration, so I returned to my own prostration. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the prayer, the people said: O Messenger of Allah! You made one prostration during the prayer so long that we thought some matter had occurred or revelation was being sent down to you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It was nothing like that; rather, this son of mine had mounted upon me, and I disliked hurrying him, until he had fulfilled his wish.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … According to the first hadith, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed prayer while carrying his granddaughter. To consider this action as something specific to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam alone, or to claim that it has been abrogated, are all invalid notions. From this blessed action of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, we are granted the concession that if, due to some necessity, one has to do likewise, there is no harm in it. I have seen in many households that some mothers are searching for someone to carry their small child so that they may perform prayer, and in this way, many of their prayers are missed. If they become aware of this concession, it would bring them much ease, provided they are willing to accept the concession. Some jurists have said that since the Arabs used to dislike daughters—and for this reason, some Arabs would even bury them alive—the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, in order to oppose this practice, went to great lengths and carried the girl during prayer to demonstrate her importance. And Allah knows best.
