Hadith 1918

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the mosque and the people were sitting in different circles. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What is the reason that I see you in groups? Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the mosque and saw that the people had raised their hands (in prayer) like the tails of unruly horses. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Observe calmness in prayer.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the first part of the hadith, division is prohibited and collectiveness is commanded. The explanation of the second part is found in another narration on the same subject from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah radi Allahu anhu, in which it is mentioned that the noble Companions, when concluding the prayer with salam, used to move their hands to the right and left. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam instructed them to remain calm, that is, to keep their hands on their thighs while turning for salam. The Hanafis have tried to derive from this hadith a negation of raising the hands (raf‘ al-yadayn) at the time of bowing (ruku‘), which is in no way correct. Its clarification has already passed in the discussion regarding the brevity of salam and the dislike (karahah) of gesturing with the hand along with it. From this hadith, it is understood that making a non-shari‘ (unlawful) gesture during prayer is not permissible. On which occasions did the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gesture? A detailed discussion on this will come ahead.
