It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Humayd Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Companions said: O Messenger of Allah! How should we send blessings upon you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Say like this: "O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and his wives and his descendants as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, and bless Muhammad and his wives and his descendants as You blessed the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the words of the salutation (durood), who are meant by the "Aal" (family) of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam? Regarding this, the following three opinions are presented: (1) The entire Ummah (community) of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam (2) Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib (3) The household (Ahl al-Bayt) and descendants of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
Whoever considered any of these meanings to be preponderant has presented various evidences in its favor, but our view is that the primary application of the word "Aal" is upon the third meaning. Secondly, in those narrations where, instead of "wa Aalihi," the words "wa azwajihi wa dhurriyyatihi" (and his wives and his descendants) are found in Bukhari and Muslim, these clarify the individuals included in the "Aal" of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Thirdly, it is in this meaning that the "Aal" of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam possesses a special distinction and exclusivity.
