Sayyiduna Zaid bin Kharijah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I myself asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) how should blessings be sent upon you? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Send blessings upon me and strive (in doing so), then say: O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In Sunan al-Nasa’i (1292), the wording of this hadith is: "Send blessings upon me and strive in supplication, and say: Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala aali Muhammad." That is: Send blessings upon me and make effort in supplication and say: Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala aali Muhammad. By combining both narrations, the salutation (salat) is completed, that is, the words of salutation are taken from the narration of al-Nasa’i and the words of blessing (barakah) are taken from the narration of Musnad Ahmad.
The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: {اِنَّاللّٰہَوَمَلٰٓئِکَتَہٗیُصَلُّوْنَعَلَیالنَّبِیِّطٰٓیاَیُّھَاالَّذِیْنَاٰمَنُوْاصَلُّوْاعَلَیْہِوَسَلِّمُوْاتَسْلِیْمًا۔} (Surah al-Ahzab: 56)
That is: Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon this Prophet. O you who believe! Send blessings upon him and send abundant salutations of peace. Although the majority of the scholars are not of the opinion that sending blessings (salat) upon the Prophet is obligatory in prayer, Allah, the Exalted, has commanded salat and salam in this verse, the minimum application of which is in prayer, as is also evident from the question of the noble Companions. Therefore, the cautious position is that reciting salat upon the Prophet in prayer is obligatory, whereas there is consensus among the scholars of the Ummah that sending blessings upon him (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) outside of prayer is not obligatory.
