Hadith 1801

(Second chain) It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), who says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us in the gathering of Sa’d bin Ubadah. Sayyiduna Bishr bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: O Messenger of Allah! Allah has commanded us to send blessings upon you, so how should we send blessings upon you? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent until we wished that he had not asked you (peace and blessings be upon him) this question. Then he said: You should say like this: “O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim, and bless Muhammad as You blessed the family of Ibrahim among the worlds; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.” And as for Salam, you already know about it.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Allah Ta'ala's command to send blessings (salat) refers to Allah Ta'ala's statement: {اِنَّ اللّٰہَ وَمَلٰٓئِکَتَہٗیُصَلُّوْنَ عَلَی النَّبِیِّ ط ٰٓیاَیُّھَا الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا صَلُّوْا عَلَیْہِ وَسَلِّمُوْا تَسْلِیْمًا۔} (Surah Al-Ahzab: 56)

That is: Indeed, Allah Ta'ala and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe! Send blessings upon him and send salutations abundantly.

Before this command of sending blessings (salat), the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) had already been taught the method of sending salutations (salam) in the tashahhud with the words: "As-salamu 'alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu…"
