Sayyiduna Wa’il bin Hujr Hadhrami (may Allah be pleased with him) describes the manner of the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Then he sat down, spread his left foot, placed his left palm on his thigh and left knee, and raised his right elbow from his left thigh, then closed his fingers and made a circle. And in one narration: he made a circle with the thumb and middle finger and pointed with the index finger. Then when he raised his finger, I saw him moving it and supplicating with it.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of "sabbabah" is "the one who abuses" and the meaning of "sabbahah" is "the one who declares purity." These are both attributes of the index finger (angusht-e-shahadat), because when insulting someone or when declaring the purity of Allah Ta'ala, it is generally this finger that is used to gesture. For the ease of the readers, we have translated these words as "index finger," because in our context this finger is known by this name. Nevertheless, in some places the word "sabbabah" will also be mentioned. In the ahadith regarding the gesture during tashahhud, what is meant by supplication is the entire tashahhud, the supplications, and the salutations (salawat).
A man from Banu Tamim says: I asked Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu about a man gesturing with his finger during prayer, so he said: This is sincerity.
Benefits: … The intent of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu is that gesturing with the finger during tashahhud is a proof of sincerity and tawhid (monotheism).
