Hadith 1775

Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) taught me these words to recite in the Qunoot of Witr: O Allah! Guide me among those whom You have guided, grant me well-being among those whom You have granted well-being, befriend me among those whom You have befriended, bless for me what You have given me, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. Surely, You decree and none can decree over You. Indeed, he whom You befriend is never humiliated. Blessed and Exalted are You, our Lord.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the narration of Abu Dawud, before the last sentence, the words "وَلَا یَعِزُّ مَنْ عَادَیْتَ" (and the one whom You show enmity to cannot attain honor) are also mentioned. Common people remember this supplication including these words. What is the ruling on reciting "اللّٰهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْتَعِينُكَ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُكَ …" in the Qunoot of Witr? It is not established from any authentic and marfu‘ (attributed directly to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) narration to recite this supplication in the Qunoot of Witr. According to Sunan al-Bayhaqi, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was taught to recite this supplication in Qunoot Nazilah (supplication at times of calamity), but this hadith is mursal (a narration with a missing link in the chain). This supplication is established from Sayyiduna ‘Umar radi Allahu anhu, but he also used to recite it in the Qunoot Nazilah after the bowing (ruku‘); this too is a narration of Sunan al-Bayhaqi.

Qunoot of Witr should be recited before bowing (ruku‘): Sayyiduna Ubayy ibn Ka‘b radi Allahu anhu says: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to perform three rak‘ahs of Witr, reciting Surah al-A‘la in the first rak‘ah, Surah al-Kafirun in the second, and Surah al-Ikhlas in the third, and he would perform Qunoot before bowing (ruku‘). (al-Nasa’i: 1699) It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy ibn Ka‘b radi Allahu anhu, he says: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to perform Witr and would recite the supplication of Qunoot before bowing (ruku‘)." (Ibn Majah: 1182)
