Hadith 1748

Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that she found the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) missing from the bed, so she searched for him with her hand. When her hand touched him, she realized that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the state of prostration and was supplicating: "O my Lord! Grant my soul its piety, purify it, You are the best to purify it, You are its Guardian and Master."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … One context of this hadith is as follows: Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha says: One night I found the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam missing from the bed. (Since it was dark,) I searched for him sallallahu alayhi wa sallam with my hand. When my hand touched the soles of his sallallahu alayhi wa sallam feet, I felt that his feet were upright and he was in his mosque, reciting this supplication: “O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your wrath, and in Your pardon from Your punishment. I seek refuge in You from You. I cannot enumerate praise upon You; You are as You have praised Yourself.” (Muslim: 486, Musnad Ahmad: 25655) However, in the hadith of Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha in which the supplication “Rabbī a‘ṭinī taqwāhā…” is mentioned, these words are found in a supplication established from the hadith of Zayd ibn Arqam. (See: Muslim: 2722, Musnad Ahmad: 19308)
