Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates the Tahajjud prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out for prayer and prayed, and during the prayer or in prostration he began to supplicate: O Allah! Place light in my heart, and light in my hearing, and light in my sight, and light on my right, and light on my left, and light in front of me, and light behind me, and light above me, and light beneath me, and make me light. Shu’bah says: Or the last phrase is like this: Make for me light. (O Allah! Place light in my heart, light in my ears, light in my sight, light on my right, light on my left, light in front of me, light behind me, light above me, and light beneath me, and make me light.)

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In Musnad Ahmad, this is a lengthy hadith. What is meant by "light" (nur) in this hadith? There are two opinions regarding this: (1) It is actual, real light, which will create illumination amidst the darknesses of the Day of Resurrection; and (2) by this is meant knowledge, guidance, clarification of the truth, and its illumination, so that misguidance cannot enter from any direction.
