Hadith 1689

Zaid bin Wahb narrates: Sayyiduna Hudhaifah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the mosque and saw a man from a nearby area of Kindah performing prayer. He was neither completing the bowing (ruku') nor the prostration (sujud). When he finished, Sayyiduna Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Since when have you been praying like this?" He replied: "For forty years." Sayyiduna Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "(The reality is that) you have not prayed for forty years, and if you were to die in this state, with your prayer being like this, you would not die upon the religion that was given to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then he turned to him and, teaching him the prayer, said: "A man can lighten the prayer even while completing the bowing and prostration (it is not necessary to hasten)."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From the statement of Sayyiduna Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu, it is understood that prayer (salah) without tranquility (itmi’nan) is invalid. The meaning of the last sentence is that if a person is compelled to perform the prayer quickly, he should shorten the standing (qiyam) but should not allow any deficiency in the bowing (ruku‘) and prostration (sujud). In several ahadith, tranquility and moderation in bowing and prostration have been taught. After five or six pages, study the section under the heading regarding the obligation of adopting tranquility after rising from bowing and prostration, and the warning for one who abandons it. As an example, one hadith is mentioned here as well: It is narrated from Hazrat Taliq bin Ali radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((Allah, Mighty and Majestic, does not look at the prayer of a servant who does not straighten his back between its bowing and prostration.)) … Allah Ta‘ala does not look towards the prayer of that servant who does not straighten his back during the bowing and prostration.
