Hadith 1686

A companion of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Every Surah has its portion from bowing (ruku) and prostration (sajdah). And in another narration: Give every Surah its portion from bowing and prostration. ‘Asim says: Later I met Abu Al-‘Aliyah and said to him: Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to recite several Surahs in one rak‘ah; do you know who narrated this hadith to you? He said: There is no doubt that I know it, and I even know how long it has been since he narrated this hadith to me; he narrated this hadith to me fifty years ago.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Imam Ibn Abi Shaybah mentioned this hadith in the Book of Prayer, in the chapter “Whoever does not combine two surahs in one rak‘ah.” Imam Ibn Abi Shaybah wants to establish that in one rak‘ah only one surah should be recited. However, in several ahadith of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), it is established that two or more surahs were recited in one rak‘ah, as this issue has been clarified in this very book in ahadith numbers 552, 553, and 554. Therefore, the person referred to in the aforementioned hadith is one who, in terms of the excellence of pronunciation and clarity, does not fulfill the right of reciting the Qur’an in prayer, but rather recites it hastily like poetry. Or, the meaning of this hadith is that if the recitation is lengthy, then the bowing (ruku‘) and prostration (sujud) should also be lengthy, and if the recitation is short, then the bowing and prostration should also be short, as is established from hadith number (628).
