Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: A man asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about a matter related to prayer, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Clean between the fingers of your hands and feet. That is, perform ablution thoroughly. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said to him: When you bow (in ruku‘), place your palms on your knees until they are settled in their place, then when you prostrate, place your forehead on the ground until you feel the surface of the earth.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of the last sentence is that the forehead should be placed during prostration (sajdah) in such a way that it is firmly set on the ground, and this will only be possible when there is composure and tranquility in the prayer, and the nose is also placed on the ground. The summary of the discussion is that, in the beginning, the Sunnah practice was that during bowing (ruku‘), the hands would be interlaced and placed between the knees, and if there were two followers, they would stand to the right and left of the imam. However, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) then introduced a new command and practice: in ruku‘, the hands should be placed on the knees in such a way that they grasp them, and if there is one follower, he stands to the right of the imam, and if there are two, they stand behind him. Now, the Muslim ummah acts according to this second method.
