Hadith 1675

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I performed a prayer behind Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), and he reminded me of that prayer which I had performed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the two caliphs. Mutarrif says: (Upon hearing this) I went and prayed with him, (I saw that) when he would go into prostration and when he would raise his head from bowing, he would say the takbeer. Then I asked: O Abu Najid! Who was the first to abandon this method? He said: When Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) became old and his voice became weak, he abandoned it.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … وَکُلَّمَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَہُ مِنَ الرُّکُوع (and whenever he raised his head from bowing, he would say the takbir). It appears that the correct wording is مِنَ السُّجُوْد ("from prostration"), as the context and sequence demand this, and it is established from several hadiths of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that when he would raise his head from bowing (ruku‘), he would say سَمِعَ اللّٰہُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَہُ ("Allah hears the one who praises Him"). This was the excuse of Sayyiduna ‘Uthman radi Allahu anhu. Nevertheless, many scholars have understood from this that Sayyiduna ‘Uthman radi Allahu anhu used to say it quietly, and it is also possible that he considered it permissible to omit these takbirs. According to some narrations, the first to abandon these takbirs was Sayyiduna Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhu or Ziyad; it is possible that Sayyiduna Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhu abandoned them while following Sayyiduna ‘Uthman radi Allahu anhu, and Ziyad did so while following him. In any case, the issue is clear in itself, and the practice of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam regarding these takbirs is established in mass-transmitted (mutawatir) hadiths.
