Hadith 1617

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, who says that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would recite aloud in some prayers and remain silent in others. Therefore, we recite aloud in those prayers in which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, recited aloud, and we remain silent in those in which he remained silent. Someone said to him: Perhaps the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to recite in his heart. But he became angry and said: Is an accusation being made against the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The wording of the narration in Sahih Bukhari is as follows: Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu says: Wherever the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was commanded to recite, he recited, and wherever he was commanded to remain silent, he remained silent. The statement of Allah, the Exalted, is: "And your Lord is not forgetful." (Surah Maryam: 64) Furthermore, it is stated: "Indeed, there is for you in the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam an excellent example." (Ahzab: 21) The reality of the matter is that regarding the recitation in the prayers of Dhuhr and Asr, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu was hesitant; in some of the narrations transmitted from him, it is completely negated, in some it is affirmed, and in some he has expressed doubt. In any case, from several Companions it is established that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam recited (aloud) in Dhuhr and Asr. For example: Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah, Sayyiduna Khabbab, Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, Sayyiduna Jabir ibn Samurah, Sayyiduna Bara' ibn Azib, and Sayyiduna Anas. Therefore, these affirmative narrations will, in every case, be given precedence over the negative or doubtful narration of Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu. There is no need to delve further into the discussion of reconciliation, because the matter is clear.
