Hadith 1609

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed one night and kept bowing and prostrating with the recitation of a single verse until morning. (That verse is:) {إِنْ تُعَذِّ بْہُمْ فَإِنَّہُمْ عِبَادُکَ، وَإِنْ تَغْفِرْ لَھُمْ فَإِنَّکَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِیْزُ الْحَکَیْمُ} When morning came, I said: O Messenger of Allah! You kept reciting only one verse until morning and kept bowing and prostrating with it? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I asked Allah Almighty to intercede for my Ummah, and He granted it to me, and if Allah wills, it will be granted to everyone who does not associate anything with Allah Almighty.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Every hadith in this chapter is clear in its meaning. The concession given in the last hadith is astonishing: that a single verse can be recited repeatedly in every rak‘ah. It is evident that permission is also being granted to recite a single surah multiple times. Those people who have memorized only the short surahs at the end of the Qur’an, in light of this hadith, can attain the virtue of a lengthy standing (qiyam) or reciting more verses in a single rak‘ah by repeatedly reciting the same surah or verse.
