Hadith 1602

(Second chain) Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him): People have complained about you regarding everything, even about the prayer. (What is the reality?) He said: I lengthen the first two rak’ahs and shorten the last two, and I do not fall short in following the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Upon hearing this, he said: This is exactly what I thought of you.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Among the common people, there is a strongly held belief that after reciting Surah al-Fatihah in the first and second units (rak‘ah) of the obligatory prayer (fard salah), it is necessary to recite additional Qur’anic verses, and in the third and fourth units, it is necessary to suffice with only Surah al-Fatihah. Although this practice itself is correct, this belief is not correct. The reality is that after Surah al-Fatihah in every rak‘ah, one may proceed to bowing (ruku‘), and in every rak‘ah, it is also permissible to recite additional Qur’anic verses after Surah al-Fatihah.
