It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to lead us in prayer, and in the first two rak‘ahs of Zuhr and ‘Asr, he would recite Surah Al-Fatihah and two additional surahs, and sometimes he would let us hear a verse. In another narration, it is mentioned: In the latter two rak‘ahs, he would recite only Surah Al-Fatihah, and in the first rak‘ah of Zuhr, he would lengthen the recitation, and in the second, he would shorten it, and he would do the same in the Fajr prayer.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From this and other ahadith, it is understood that it is permissible to suffice with only Surah al-Fatihah in every rak‘ah of both obligatory (fard) and supererogatory (nafl) prayers, because the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would sometimes suffice with the recitation of only Surah al-Fatihah in the last two rak‘ahs of Dhuhr and ‘Asr, and, in terms of the rak‘ah itself, there is no difference between the first and last rak‘ahs.
