Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I cannot recite the Qur’an, so command me with something that will suffice me in its place. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Say: Alhamdulillah, Subhanallah, La ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. (All praise is for Allah, Allah is pure, there is no deity except Allah, Allah is the Greatest, there is no power to avoid sin nor strength to do good except with Allah [‘s help]). The man recited these words and closed his palm, as he had counted them on his fingers including the thumb, making five. Then he said: O Messenger of Allah! These (words) are for Allah, what is there for myself? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: For yourself, say: Allahumma ighfir li, warhamni, wa ‘afini, wahdini, warzuqni. (O Allah! Forgive me, have mercy on me, grant me well-being, guide me, and provide for me). He recited these (words) and closed his other palm, counting them on his fingers including the thumb, making five. Then the man left, with both his palms closed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him and said: Surely, he has filled both his hands with goodness.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Sayyiduna Rifa‘ah radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam taught a man how to perform prayer and said to him: “If you have (memorized) any Qur’an, then recite it; otherwise, praise Allah, magnify Him, and declare His oneness, then bow (in ruku‘).” (Abu Dawud, Nasa’i, Ibn Majah)
It is understood from this that a person who is not able to recite the Qur’an should say these words in prayer: “Alhamdulillah, SubhanAllah, La ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.” However, along with this, he should continue to strive to learn the Noble Qur’an as much as possible. When a person embraces Islam, prayer becomes obligatory upon him immediately. If he is unable to learn the recitation of the Qur’an in this short time, then he should perform the prayer with these words and, at the earliest opportunity, learn the obligatory recitation.
