Hadith 159

It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "No person should call grapevines 'karm', for indeed, the truly noble (karm) is the Muslim person."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Meanings of karam: noble, generous, generosity, openhandedness, magnanimity, kindness, high-mindedness, excellent and fertile land, forgiveness and pardon. Grapes are called karam on the basis that wine made from them incites generosity and openhandedness; thus, the very name of grapes was made karam, meaning generosity. However, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam disliked that this word, which possesses such lofty meaning, be used for grapes; rather, its true deserving recipient is the believer. Zamakhshari said: In reality, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, through a very beautiful and subtle method, wished to preserve the meaning of Allah Ta'ala’s statement {اِنَّ اَکْرَمَکُمْ عِنْدَ اللّٰہِ اَتْقَاکُمْ}. In fact, it is not that calling grapes karam is being prohibited, but rather, it is being indicated that the pious Muslim is worthy that the name Allah Ta'ala has given him should not be shared with anything else.
