Hadith 1566

عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّهَا سُئِلَتْ عَنْ قِرَاءَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ: كَانَ يُقَطِّعُ قِرَاءَتَهُ آيَةً آيَةً، {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ}
It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) that when she was asked about the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), she replied: He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite separately and one verse at a time: {بِسْمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیْمِ اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰہِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِیْنَ اَلرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ مَالِکِ یَوْمِ الدِّیْنِ}.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The question arises whether this hadith of Sayyida Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha pertains to the prayer of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam or to outside of prayer. The first scenario appears more appropriate and preferable. And Allah knows best what is correct. Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu was asked: How was the recitation of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam? He replied: In his sallallahu alayhi wa sallam’s recitation, the letters would be elongated. Then he recited {بِسْمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیْمِ} in which he elongated {بِسْمِ اللّٰہِ}, { الرَّحْمَنِ}, and {الرَّحِیْمِ}. (Sahih Bukhari: 5046)
