Hadith 1559

Abu Muslima Saeed bin Yazid says: I asked Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) whether the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite {بِسْمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ} or {اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰہِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِیْنَ}? He replied: You are asking me about something which I do not remember, or no one before you has asked me about it.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The doubt attributed to Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu is, in reality, a doubt that occurred to a narrator below him, because he himself remembered this issue, as he states according to some chains of this very hadith that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, Sayyiduna Umar, and Sayyiduna Uthman would begin the recitation with {اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰہِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِیْنَ}. (Musnad Ahmad: 11991, Bukhari: 128, Muslim: 399) And it is also possible that Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu himself forgot this issue in his later years, because he lived a long life. In any case, in such a situation, the affirmative (musbit) will be given precedence over the negative (nafi), because the affirmative contains an addition of knowledge. And in one narration, Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu says: I performed prayer behind the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Umar, and Sayyiduna Uthman, and I did not hear any of them recite {بِسْمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ}. (Musnad Ahmad: 12810, Muslim: 399) In this chapter, these very narrations are being discussed.
