Hadith 1425

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not pray in camel enclosures, because they have been created from jinn; when they become agitated, do you not see their eyes and alertness? However, you may pray in sheep enclosures, for they are closer to mercy.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In these hadiths, the command has been given to perform prayer in sheepfolds and not to perform prayer in camel enclosures, and the reason for this distinction has also been explained. It is not correct to say that the prohibition of praying in camel enclosures is due to the impurity of their urine and dung; if this were the reason, then prayer would also have been prohibited in sheepfolds, because the ruling regarding the urine, etc., of both should be the same. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself clarified the cause: that there is a mischievous and unruly nature found in camels, and thus the worshipper has been instructed in this manner so that he may be protected from potential harm. The meaning of “they are closer to mercy” is that, in contrast to camels, this animal (i.e., sheep/goats) possesses weakness and gentleness in its temperament, and the worshipper has no concern from it. Further, consider the following blessed hadiths:

Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Pray in the sheepfolds and wipe their mucus, for indeed they are among the animals of Paradise.” (Bayhaqi: 2/449, Bazzar: 49, Sahihah: 1128)

Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was asked about praying in sheepfolds. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Pray in them, for indeed there is blessing in them.” (Abu Dawud: 184, Tirmidhi: 81, Ibn Majah: 494)

Allamah Azimabadi rahimahullah writes: Its meaning is that rebellion and defiance are not found in sheep, rather, there is weakness and tranquility in their temperament. They do not harm the worshipper nor interrupt his prayer; rather, they are blessed, and thus prayer should be performed in their enclosures. (Awn al-Ma’bud: 1/120)
