Hadith 1419

Under this chapter, the following sub-chapters and hadiths have been mentioned.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: All of the earth is a mosque and a purifier, except for graveyards and bathhouses.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has commanded that, whenever possible, obligatory prayers be performed in mosques; otherwise, with the exception of a few specific places, the entire earth has been declared a place of prayer. In contrast, for previous communities, it was necessary that they reach their houses of worship to perform prayer. Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah, while discussing the hadith ((I have been given five things which were not given to anyone before me: … and the earth has been made for me a mosque and a means of purification …)), said: The more correct opinion is that of Khattabi, that before you sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, it was only permissible for people to perform prayer in specific houses of worship, such as churches and synagogues, etc. This is supported by the narration of Amr ibn Shu‘ayb, which contains the words: ((And those before me used to pray only in their churches)), and the wording of the hadith narrated by al-Bazzar from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu is: ((And there was not among the Prophets anyone who would pray before reaching his mihrab (prayer niche).)) (Fath al-Bari: 1/576)

The meaning of hammam is hot water, but later this word came to be used for a place of bathing, whether the bath is taken with hot or cold water. In this regard, the following narration should be kept in mind: It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade prayer in seven places: the garbage dump, the slaughterhouse, the graveyard, the thoroughfare, the bathhouse (hammam), the camel pen, and the roof of the Ka‘bah. (Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah) However, this narration is weak. The prohibition of praying in camel pens is mentioned, and its details and reason will be discussed ahead. In the chapter ABWAB AL-MASAJID, under BAB AL-NAHY ‘AN ITTAKHADH QUBUR AL-ANBIYA’ WA AL-SALIHIN MASAJID LIL-TABARRUK WA AL-TA‘ZIM, some ahadith related to making graves places of prayer have already been mentioned.
