Hadith 1394

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting with his thigh uncovered. In the meantime, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to enter, and he (the Prophet) granted him permission while remaining in the same state. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also granted him permission and remained as he was. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission, so the Prophet covered his thigh with a cloth. When all these people had left, I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! When Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) sought permission, you granted them permission and remained in the same state (with your thigh uncovered), but when Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission, you covered your thigh? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Aisha, should I not show modesty before a man whom, by Allah, even the angels show modesty before?
