It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraidah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished with the conquest of Makkah, he proceeded towards the graveyard and sat down at its near side. It seemed as if he was talking to someone, and he was also weeping. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came before him and said: May Allah make me a sacrifice for you, why are you weeping? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: I sought permission from my Lord to visit my mother’s grave, and Allah granted me permission for that. But when I sought permission to pray for her forgiveness, He did not grant me that permission. I had forbidden you from three things: First, that you could not eat the meat of sacrificial animals after three days, but now you are permitted to eat it for as long as you wish. Second, I had forbidden you from visiting graveyards, but now whoever wishes to visit the graveyard may do so; I too have been granted permission to visit my mother’s grave. However, whoever does not wish to visit the graveyard, let him not go. Third, I had forbidden you from using gourds, green jars, and pitch-lined vessels, and had permitted you to use other vessels. Now the ruling is that no vessel makes anything lawful or unlawful, so you may use all vessels, but avoid every intoxicating thing.
