Hadith 1326

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Some people sit in the mosques like pegs; the angels are their companions. If they are absent, the angels search for them; if they are ill, the angels visit them; if they are occupied with some work, the angels assist them. And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The one who sits in the mosque is upon three qualities: a brother from whom benefit is gained, or a firm word, or such a mercy that is awaited.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The reason for the last sentence is that the mosque is a thoroughfare for Islamic brothers and a place for the mention of the Shari‘ah sciences and the descent of mercy. Therefore, whoever makes it a habit to sit in the mosque, those passing by benefit from him; then, under the pretext of teaching and learning, and giving and seeking legal opinions (fatwa and istifta’), words of wisdom are exchanged. Even the luminous (angelic) creation can become the servant of the earthly (human) creation, provided that one attaches oneself to Allah Ta‘ala. What more can be said than this: the mosque is the house of Allah Ta‘ala, the place of prostration for the believers—how blessed and sacred must that place be, where for years upon years the praises (tahliilat), glorifications (tasbihat), praises (tahmidat), and declarations of Allah’s greatness (takbirat) have been mentioned, where for years the recitation of His Noble Speech (the Qur’an) has been performed in abundance. The mosque is a strong fortress for protection from devils. Whoever loves the mosque, whoever takes part in maintaining the mosque, whoever finds tranquility there—how fortunate and blessed he will be.

But, alas! The majority of the Muslim Ummah is far removed from this station, and the worshippers have come to think that by collecting a few rupees and appointing, as employees, a traditional imam and a servant, the requirements of the mosque are fulfilled. After doing this, no worshipper feels inclined to sweep the mosque, to arrive early and give the call to prayer (adhan), to lay out the rows for the worshippers, or to fill water for ablution (wudu)…

His feeble mind has decided and he has come to believe that by giving fifty rupees monthly to the mosque fund, he is absolved of responsibility. Respected readers! Examine your daily routines and, in the light of the station of humanity and the station of faith, scrutinize your actions and movements. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:

۔)) (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

That is: Allah Ta‘ala will grant shade to seven types of people in His shade on the Day when there will be no shade except His shade: (among them is:) the man whose heart remains attached to the mosque when he leaves it, until he returns to it.

Therefore, we should make arrangements to perform voluntary (nafl) prayers and recite the Noble Qur’an in our homes, but along with this, there are also some requirements of the houses of Allah Ta‘ala. When we delay in visiting the house of a close relative, he complains in a particular manner; perhaps Allah Ta‘ala and His angels also complain about us.
