Hadith 13184

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: A bridge will be placed over Hell. Then he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I will be the first to cross over that bridge. On that day, even the call of the Messengers will be: O Allah! Keep [us] safe, keep [us] safe. On that bridge, there will be hooks like the thorns of Sa‘dan, bent like them. Have you seen the thorns of Sa‘dan? The Companions said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: They will be like the thorns of Sa‘dan, but none knows their great size except Allah, the Exalted. People will be snatched away according to their deeds; some will perish just like that, and some will be destroyed, torn into pieces.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … (1) From this chapter, the scholarly rank of Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah A’ishah Siddiqah radi Allahu anha becomes evident, as she asked the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam about a matter regarding which, according to the testimony of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, no one from the Ummah had ever inquired from him before. Her question was: On the Day of Resurrection, when upheaval will have occurred, neither the earth nor the sky will remain—where will the people be then? The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: The people will be on the Sirat. Sirat is the name of the bridge that will be over Hell (Jahannam), and all people will pass over it. Beyond it will be Paradise (Jannah). People will cross it according to the measure of their deeds—some very swiftly, some behind them, some further behind, and some will stumble and fall but eventually cross over. However, the sinners will be dragged by their feet and thrown into Hell.

(2) From this chapter, the affirmation of the Sirat is also established.

(3) It is also understood that on the Day of Resurrection, the Messenger of Allah, the Prophets, the martyrs, the angels, and the general believers will intercede on behalf of the sinful inhabitants of Hell, and with Allah’s permission, they will take them out of Hell. So much so that if there is even a mustard seed’s weight of faith in someone’s heart, they too will be taken out of Hell.

(4) They will have been burned in the Fire according to the measure of their deeds—some up to their feet, some up to half their shins, some up to their waists, and some up to their necks.

(5) It is also understood that the human face is extremely honored and noble in the sight of Allah. The Fire of Hell will not burn their faces. Allah created this face to be bowed before Him. In this world, if it is intended to punish someone, striking the face is prohibited.

(6) The sinful people, after coming out of Hell, will perform ritual bath (ghusl) in the Water of Life (Mā’ al-Ḥayāt), and they will become completely clean, and thus soft and delicate like the tender plants that grow in the foam of a flood.

(7) After being taken out of Hell, these people will be stopped on a bridge between Paradise and Hell, and the injustices they committed against each other will be settled, and the wrongdoers will be given their due.

(8) It appears that this bridge will be separate from the Sirat, the bridge over Hell. And Allah Ta’ala knows best.

(9) It is also understood that in Paradise, the believers will go to their abodes as if they already know the way.

(10) Passing over the Sirat is an extremely difficult stage. At that time, even the Messenger of Allah and the Prophets will be supplicating for safety. May Allah Ta’ala have special mercy on us on that day. Amin!
