Hadith 13126

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about Kawthar. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is a river which my Lord has granted me. Its water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey, and in it there will be birds with necks like those of camels. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Those birds will be very excellent. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Umar! Those who eat them will be even better and superior than them.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu, who says: “One day, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was among us when he dozed off lightly, then he raised his head smiling. We said: O Messenger of Allah! What has made you smile? He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ‘A surah has just now been revealed to me,’ then he recited: {بِسْمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیمِ۔ إِنَّا أَعْطَیْنَاکَ الْکَوْثَرَ۔ فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّکَ وَانْحَرْ۔ إِنَّ شَانِئَکَ ہُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ۔}. Then he said: ‘Do you know what al-Kawthar is?’ We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ‘Indeed, it is a river which my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, has promised me. Upon it is much good. It is a basin upon which my ummah will arrive on the Day of Resurrection. Its vessels are as numerous as the stars.’ …

One day, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was present among us, when suddenly a light sleep overtook him, then he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam raised his head smiling. We said: O Messenger of Allah! Why are you smiling? He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: A surah has just now been revealed to me, then he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam recited it: {بِسْمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیمِ۔ إِنَّا أَعْطَیْنَاکَ الْکَوْثَرَ۔ فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّکَ وَانْحَرْ۔ إِنَّ شَانِئَکَ ہُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ۔}. Then he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam asked: Do you know what al-Kawthar is? We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: It is a river, Allah Ta’ala has promised it to me, there is much good in it, it is a basin, my ummah will arrive at it on the Day of Resurrection, its vessels are as numerous as the stars. (Sahih Muslim: 607)

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik radi Allahu anhu recited this verse {اِنَّا اَعْطَیْنَاکَ الْکَوْثَر} and said: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “I have been given al-Kawthar, and it is a river that flows (thus, on the surface of the earth) without being dug, and its banks are domes of pearls. I struck my hand upon its soil, and behold, it was pure, intensely fragrant musk, and its pebbles were pearls.” (Ahmad: 3/152, Sahihah: 2513)

Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah says that Imam Ibn al-Qayyim rahimahullah said (Hadi al-Arwah: 1/286) that Ibn Abi al-Dunya, with his chain, narrates from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik radi Allahu anhu, who says: “I think you people believe that the rivers of Paradise will be like long trenches in the earth, but the matter is not like that. The rivers of Paradise flow on the surface of the earth, one bank will be of pearls and the other of ruby, and their soil will be azfar musk.” Mu’awiyah bin Qurrah asked: What is azfar? He said: It is that musk which is pure and unmixed with anything else. (Ya’qub bin Ubayd is trustworthy, the rest of the chain is sound. Ibn Marduyah presented this narration as marfu’ in his Tafsir, but in his chain is Mahdi bin Hakim, whose condition is unknown. The mawquf narration is authentic, but its ruling is that of marfu’, because such a statement cannot be said from opinion.)

Masruq, while explaining {مَائٍ مَّکْسُوْب}, said that what is meant is water that flows without trenches.

I (al-Albani) say: Ibn Marduyah has, in (al-Durr al-Manthur: 6/402), narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas radi Allahu anhu the explanation of {اِنَّا اَعْطَیْنٰکَ الْکَوْثَر}, that in Paradise there is a river called al-Kawthar, its depth in the ground is seventy thousand farsakh.

Al-Mundhiri attributed this statement to Ibn Abi al-Dunya and indicated its weakness. I say that this statement is munkar, because it contradicts the narration of Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu. And Allah knows best. (Sahihah: 2513)
