Hadith 1299

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Let not Bilal’s call to prayer prevent any of you from your pre-dawn meal (suhoor), for he only calls the adhan so that the one who is standing (in prayer) may return and the one who is sleeping may awaken. And (the true dawn) does not appear in this way (rising upwards), rather it spreads out in this way (across the horizon).” And Ibn Abi ‘Adi Abu ‘Umar, while explaining this example, joined his fingers together and bent them, and made a gap between his index fingers.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In this hadith, the wisdom behind the adhan (call to prayer) at the time of suhoor is being explained: so that the one who is awake may take some rest in preparation for the Fajr prayer, or, if he intends to fast, he may partake in suhoor (pre-dawn meal); and the one who is sleeping may wake up, perform ritual bath (ghusl) or ablution (wudu), and get ready for the Fajr prayer. In the final phrase of the blessed hadith, the difference between the false dawn (fajr kadhdhib) and the true dawn (fajr sadiq) is being mentioned concisely.
