Hadith 12888

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: The Hour will not be established until knowledge is taken away, tribulations appear, and killing becomes widespread. The Companions asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by killing? He (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) replied: Killing.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Now there is a severe lack of Islamic knowledge; great scholars are passing away very quickly. At this time, our era has become the embodiment of the following blessed hadith.

Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Amr radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Indeed, Allah does not take away knowledge by snatching it from the people, but He takes away knowledge by taking away the scholars. Until, when He does not leave a single scholar, people will take ignorant ones as their leaders. Then, when they are asked, they will give religious verdicts (fatwas) without knowledge, so they will go astray and will lead others astray as well.” (Sahih Bukhari: 100, Sahih Muslim: 2673)

If this era is compared with the era of the Salaf Salihin (pious predecessors) and the generations after them, then the severe lack of Islamic knowledge becomes clearly evident. The abundance of killing and tribulations is also obvious.

Here, it is necessary to keep in mind that all forms of worldly education are a skill, which prove helpful in various ways in the world. However, from this education, one does not attain piety (taqwa), righteousness, the sentiments of Islamic honor, or understanding of the religion. In fact, it has been observed in some people that after obtaining high degrees, they become afflicted with pride and arrogance. Reflect:

In our society, there are holders of Master’s, MPhil, and PhD degrees in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Urdu, and other subjects. But if they are deprived of understanding the Qur’an, are distant from the translation of the Qur’an, do not have mastery over the knowledge of hadith, and have no experience in Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), then it will be said that there is a lack of Islamic knowledge in this society, and those residing in it are ignorant. Because in the view of the Shari’ah, that is called knowledge which becomes the cause of righteous deeds.

Honored readers! Do not take this lightly; the writer of these lines has interacted with thousands of such individuals who are adorned with high worldly education, but are miles away from the obligation of prayer (salah), cannot recite the Noble Qur’an even by looking at it, and despite having the ability, do not get the opportunity to open the Noble Qur’an for months. Yet, they consider themselves so capable that it is as if the world would be helpless without them. If you do not believe this, then observe any university and the mosque built within it at the time of prayer. In the Shari’ah, such a society has no value.
