Hadith 12883

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Count for me those who recite the Kalimah of Islam. We said: O Messenger of Allah! Do you fear anything concerning us, when our number is between six hundred and seven hundred? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You do not know, perhaps trials may befall you. Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Thus, we were tested in such a way that a man had to perform prayer in hiding.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This prophecy was fulfilled during the era of Banu Umayyah. Hafiz Ibn Hajar said: It is authentically established that Hajjaj ibn Yusuf and his governor, Walid, and others used to delay the prayer beyond its proper time. There are well-known reports regarding this. In Musannaf ‘Abd al-Razzaq, it is mentioned: Imam ‘Ata’ rahimahullah said: One day, Walid delayed the Jumu‘ah (Friday) prayer so much that evening approached. So I came and, before sitting, performed the Zuhr (noon) prayer, and then, while sitting, performed the ‘Asr (afternoon) prayer by gesturing, while he was still delivering the Friday sermon. Imam ‘Ata’ did this out of fear of being killed. In one narration, the teacher of Imam Bukhari, Abu Nu‘aym, mentioned in his book al-Salat: Abu Bakr ibn ‘Utbah said: I prayed next to our master Abu Juhaifah radi Allahu anhu, while Hajjaj delayed the prayer until evening. So Abu Juhaifah stood up and performed his prayer. He also transmitted the report that our master ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar radi Allahu anhuma used to pray with Hajjaj, but when Hajjaj began to delay the prayer, he stopped coming to pray with him. Likewise, Muhammad ibn Abi Isma‘il said: I was in Mina and the scrolls were being read to Walid, so they delayed the prayer. I saw Sa‘id ibn Jubayr and ‘Ata’ performing the prayer by gesturing while sitting. (Fath al-Bari: 2/14)
