Hadith 12875

(Second chain) Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (A time will come) when the people of Iraq will withhold their qafiz and dirham, Syria its mudd and dinar, and Egypt its irdabb and dinar, and you will return to where you began, and you will return to where you started. The flesh and blood of Abu Hurairah bears witness to this truth.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Qafeez, mudd, and ardab are, respectively, the units of measurement for Iraq, Sham (Greater Syria), and Egypt.

Imam Nawawi said: Regarding the meanings of “maniat al-‘iraq” (Iraq will be prevented), there are two more famous opinions (we will mention a total of four opinions):

1. The people of Iraq will accept Islam, thus the jizyah (tax on non-Muslims) will be dropped from them, as if they will stop sending their dirhams and qafeez to the Muslims, and this has already happened.

2. The non-Arabs (‘ajam) and the Romans (Byzantines) will, at the end of times, gain dominance over these regions and will prevent the Muslims from these things, as is understood from the narration in Sahih Muslim (“It is near that there will not be brought to them qafeez…”), and this has happened in our time and still exists.

3. One opinion is that the people of Iraq, Sham, and Egypt will, at the end of times, become apostates (murtadd) and thus will withhold zakat and other dues.

4. One opinion is that those disbelievers who are paying jizyah, their governments will become strong at the end of times and they will withhold jizyah and kharaj (land tax).

The meaning of “maniat” that comes first to mind is this one; the first meaning is quite far-fetched, because it is not said about someone who is exempted from jizyah due to Islam that he has stopped giving what he was giving.

Shaykh al-Albani says: When Iraq attacked Kuwait, and then when Iraq was subjected to land, sea, and air attacks, and aid from other Muslim countries was cut off from them, many people, in this context, asked about this hadith—whether Iraq could now be considered the subject of this hadith. I answered in the negative and clarified the meaning of this hadith in light of Imam Nawawi’s statements. I expressed this opinion on the 1st of Safar, 1411 Hijri. May Allah protect the Muslims from apparent and hidden tribulations. (Sahihah: 3072)

First, Hulagu Khan and his descendants remained dominant over Iraq and other regions for a long period; then, for about a century, Iraq remained independent as a Muslim state, and now again America has established dominance over Iraq and is taking away all the treasures of this land.
