Hadith 12818

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: We were with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we heard him say: Before the Day of Judgment, tribulations will spread like pieces of a dark night, (the situation will be so severe that) a man will be a believer in the morning and a disbeliever by evening, or a believer in the evening and a disbeliever by morning. People will sell their share (of religion) for a small portion of worldly goods. Hasan says: By Allah! We have seen such people, their faces are like those of humans, but they are devoid of intellect, and they have bodies but lack understanding. They are as senseless as moths drawn to fire and as greedy as flies. They take two dirhams in the morning and two dirhams in the evening, and they sell their religion for the price of a goat.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the narration of Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, it is commanded to act before these tribulations. In the morning, a believer, and by evening, a disbeliever … Its meaning is that in the morning he will be characterized by faith and adorned with righteous deeds, but by evening he will be seen trapped in the mire of disbelief and engaged in acts of disbelief. Another interpretation is that in the morning he will consider the things forbidden by Allah as forbidden, but by evening he will regard them as permissible. The point is that circumstances will take such a turn that a person will not even realize his own transformation; in this matter, he will express unawareness. Even now, it is happening that a person appears to be pious and God-fearing, but after some days, when one meets him again, his spiritual state has deteriorated, and he has abandoned obligatory acts such as prayer. Some fall due to consuming usury, others suddenly commit murder, some attempt to violate the sanctity of another family's daughter, while others are thinking of usurping someone else's wealth. Traders have no awareness of whether their trade is based on Shari‘ah principles or not. For example, in April 2009, a trader ignored a Shari‘ah rule in a transaction, and as a result, he suffered a loss of 4.8 million rupees within two days. In summary, people will become extremely interested in the world and greedy for it, and their religious affairs will deteriorate.
