Sayyiduna Khuraim bin Fatik Asadi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The people of Sham are Allah’s rod on the earth; through them, Allah will take revenge from whomever He wills, in whatever manner He wills. The hypocrites of Sham will not prevail over the believers there, and they will perish due to some distress, anger, or grief.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Umair bin Aswad and Kathir bin Murrah Hadhrami say that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu and Ibn Simt used to say: “Muslims will continue to exist on the earth until the Hour is established, and that is because the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ‘A group from my Ummah will always remain steadfast upon the command of Allah, those who oppose them will not be able to harm them, they will continue to fight their enemies, whenever one war ends, another war will break out with another people, Allah will cause the hearts of some people to deviate so that He may provide sustenance for them (the steadfast group) from them (i.e., through war booty), until the Hour comes upon them, as if it were pieces of a dark night, so they will be alarmed at that, until they put on the bodies of armor.’ And the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ‘They are the people of al-Sham (Greater Syria).’ Then the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam pointed towards al-Sham with his finger, scratching the ground (i.e., drawing a line towards al-Sham), until it caused him pain.” (Tarikh Ibn Asakir: 1/528, Silsilah al-Sahihah: 3425)
Imam al-Albani rahimahullah gave this hadith the heading: “Glad tidings for the believing people of al-Sham.” Due to the change in geographical boundaries, there is a great difference between present-day al-Sham and the boundaries of al-Sham mentioned in the ahadith. Ancient al-Sham has been divided into several countries. According to the statement of Mu’jam al-Buldan, the northern region of the Arabian Peninsula was called al-Sham; this area included Antakiyah, present-day Syria, Jordan, and from Palestine to Asqalan.
From various authentic ahadith, it is known that Hijaz, al-Sham, and Yemen are the centers of Islam and faith, and from here the banner of Islam and faith will continue to be raised. The region of Iraq, which lies to the east of Madinah, is the source of tribulations and the center of misguidance and deviation; many tribulations have originated from there, there is little good and much evil there. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam made special supplication for blessings for Yemen and al-Sham. This is because the birthplace and ancestral land of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Makkah al-Mukarramah, was a city of Yemen, and Madinah al-Munawwarah was a city of al-Sham, as Allamah Sharaf al-Din al-Tibi has mentioned in his commentary on Mishkat al-Masabih.
In these ahadith, there is glad tidings for those residing in al-Sham who support the Sunnah, act upon it, defend it, and patiently call towards it. We ask Allah Ta’ala to make us among them and to resurrect us in their group, while we are under the banner of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. In the blessed ahadith, the land of al-Sham and its people have been praised; in the past, this region was a gathering place for people of knowledge and piety, and in the future, there will also be much good and virtue in this region.
Sayyiduna Ibn Hawalah radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “The outcome will be that you will be divided into various armies: one army in al-Sham, one in Yemen, and one in Iraq.” Ibn Hawalah said: “O Messenger of Allah! If I live to see that time, which region do you command me to choose?” He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Adhere to al-Sham, for it is the chosen land of Allah, to which He gathers His chosen servants. If you refuse, then adhere to Yemen and drink from your cisterns, for indeed Allah has guaranteed me al-Sham and its people (i.e., they will be protected from tribulations).” (Abu Dawud: 2483)
