When Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Malik bin Abi Mahzura prepared to send Abdullah bin Muhairiz, who was an orphan raised by Sayyiduna Abu Mahzura (may Allah be pleased with him), towards Syria, Abdullah bin Muhairiz said: I said to Abu Mahzura (may Allah be pleased with him), “O uncle! I am going towards Syria and I think I will be questioned about your call to prayer (adhan).” Abdul Aziz says that Abdullah bin Muhairiz told him that Abu Mahzura (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: “Alright, I will tell you about my adhan. I went out with some people, and according to one narration, with ten young men. We were on a path in Hunayn, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was returning from Hunayn. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) met us on a path. Then the muezzin of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called the adhan for prayer. We heard the voice of the muezzin and, stepping aside from the path, began to imitate him and make noise in jest. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent some people to call us, and we came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and stood before him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: ‘Who among you is the one whose loud voice I heard?’ All the people pointed towards me, and they were truthful. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) let everyone go and kept me back, and said: ‘Stand up and call the adhan for prayer.’ I stood up, although the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his command were most disliked by me. Nevertheless, I stood before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself taught me the adhan, saying: Say: ALLAHU AKBAR, ALLAHU AKBAR, ASH-HADU ALLA ILAHA ILLALLAH, ASH-HADU ALLA ILAHA ILLALLAH, ASH-HADU ANNA MUHAMMADAN RASULULLAH, ASH-HADU ANNA MUHAMMADAN RASULULLAH. Then he said: Raise your voice and say again: ASH-HADU ALLA ILAHA ILLALLAH, ASH-HADU ALLA ILAHA ILLALLAH, ASH-HADU ANNA MUHAMMADAN RASULULLAH, ASH-HADU ANNA MUHAMMADAN RASULULLAH, HAYYA ‘ALAS-SALAH, HAYYA ‘ALAS-SALAH, HAYYA ‘ALAL-FALAH, HAYYA ‘ALAL-FALAH, ALLAHU AKBAR, ALLAHU AKBAR, LA ILAHA ILLALLAH. When I completed the adhan, he called me and gave me a pouch in which there was some silver. Then he placed his hand on Abu Mahzura’s forehead and passed it over his face twice, then over his hands twice, then struck his hand on his chest until the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Abu Mahzura’s navel. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: BARAKALLAHU FEEK (May Allah bless you). I said: O Messenger of Allah! Command me to give the adhan in Makkah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I have given you this command. Sayyiduna Abu Mahzura (may Allah be pleased with him) says: All the dislike I had for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) vanished, and instead, love for him was created in my heart. Then (according to the command of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him) I went to the governor of Makkah, Attab bin Asid, and by the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I began to call the adhan for prayer. Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Malik says: Whoever among my family narrated this incident to me, it was according to the narration of Abdullah bin Muhairiz.
